Classic in the Country (Berlin)

January 14-16, 2017
The Classic in the Country is a festival of basketball held over the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend. It is hosted by Hiland High School, in Berlin, Ohio. The tournament has two missions, the first being to celebrate diversity in honor of both Dr. King and the former Hiland boys’ basketball coach, the late Perry Reese Jr. The second is to bring some of the best girls basketball players and teams from around the country together on the court.

It’s a Pajama Party in January….in Ohio! This crazy idea began years ago with Karen Lamp who is the owner of Country Craft Cupboard. It went over so well the whole town decided to get involved. The Country Craft Cupboard will open at 6am. There is usually a line of ladies waiting at the door for them to open. They will have big sales and maybe even coffee for those bleary eyed shoppers. Then the rest of the stores in town will open with more sales of their own. How fun to be able to shop in your PJ’s. Hotel rooms in Berlin fill up quickly for this event. The Ohio Swiss Festival began in 1953 as a way to help the Ohio Swiss Cheese Association, based in Sugarcreek, to sell its excess cheese and to celebrate the Sugarcreek area’s Swiss Heritage. Today it continues to be celebrated on the fourth weekend after Labor Day. Friday & Saturday provide two full days of entertainment and events such as costume and yodeling contests, the Steinstossen (throwing of the stone), the Swiss Cheese Chase 5k, and a kiddie and grand parade!

Charm Days (Charm)

Charm, a small Amish town, is located on State Rt. 557 in rural Holmes County. Annually, in mid-October, the quaint community of Charm hosts Charm Days, which is a two day event hosting a bake sale, flea market, yard sales, old-fashioned chili and pies from the local school benefit and fiddling program. Merchants also offer discounts, specials and a grand prize drawing that brings the little town of Charm together.

Algonquin Mill Festival (Carrollton)

The Fall Festival at The Farm at Walnut Creek will now be October 7, 8, 10, 14 and 15. Now expanded to five days over two weekends, this event will include food, fall decorations, horseshoeing, broom making, pumpkin slingshot, straw castle, scavenger hunt, corn box, sheep shearing, spinning and the horse drawn wagon rides. An activity that children of all ages really enjoy is the “corn box.” In the corn box, traditional sand is replaced with corn for a sensory experience.

Geurnsey County Courthouse Christmas Lights & Music (Cambridge)

The courthouse comes alive nightly with thousands of pulsating lights synchronized to holiday music. This magnificent 1881 building jumps into the 21st Century as it is bathed in colored lights, 36 animated light displays, and 15,000 lights outlining the building. The display is computer controlled with 364 electrical circuits meticulously synchronized to a holiday soundtrack, with a total of 30,000 lights.

Berlin Amish Country Half Marathon (Berlin)

The 5k and certified 1/2 marathon are run on Ohio Amish Country township and county roads. There will be some nice hills to traverse. These races are being developed by runners for runners. All profits are going to the East Holmes Fire Department and the Berlin Main Street Merchants.
